Shooting, archery and wrestling out of 2026 Commonwealth Games – Reuters

Victoria will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with regional centers across the Australian state hosting most of the events, moving away from the traditional single host city model. The Games will be held in March 2026 in several cities and regional centers, including Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland, each of which has its own village of athletes.

The opening ceremony will take place at the legendary 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced on Tuesday. The announcement follows a period of exclusive dialogue between CGF, Commonwealth Games Australia (CGAus) and Victoria.

An initial roster of 16 sports has been proposed for the Games, including Twenty20 cricket, with more sports to be added later this year. However, the initial list did not include shooting and wrestling, sports in which India has performed well in previous editions of the sports extravaganza. Archery is also not on the list.

Kunwar Sultan Singh, Secretary General of the National Rifle Association of India, called the CGF’s decision devoid of “logic or reasoning”.

“It’s discouraging, shocking and completely illogical to rule out CWG filming for the second year in a row. This is not fair to shooters around the world preparing for such an important multi-sport event. I would ask the Government of India and the AIO to raise the issue with the relevant CGF bodies for the inclusion of this sport in the program of the Victoria Games 2026,” said TOI Singh.

“A concerted effort by the government and the IOA is needed to reverse this decision. United World Wrestling needs to do something to get wrestling back to its rightful place in the CWG. TOI quotes a representative of the Wrestling Federation of India.

Indian wrestlers have won 12 medals, including five golds, while the country’s shooters have won 16 medals, including seven golds. In terms of archery, which has only featured in two editions of the CWG, the last being in 2010, India has won eight medals in New Delhi, including three gold medals.

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said: “I am honored that Victoria has been selected to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games – we look forward to welcoming the world to our state. “The Commonwealth Games in Greater Victoria are great for jobs, hospitality and our economy. Australia has hosted the Commonwealth Games five times and Victoria hosted the Games in Melbourne in 2006; widely considered one of the most successful events in history.

The country has also hosted the Games in Sydney in 1938, Perth in 1962, Brisbane in 1982 and most recently the Gold Coast in 2018. Victoria also hosted the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo in 2004. CGF President Dame Louise Martin said: The Federation is very pleased to award Victoria with the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“The Commonwealth Games of Australia and the Government of Victoria have taken a bold and innovative approach to hosting our premier multi-sport event. We believe we have found the perfect partner in Victoria for the next leg of our journey. »

Under the new CGF “strategic roadmap” unveiled at the 2021 General Assembly on October 11, athletics and swimming will be the only mandatory CWG sports from the 2026 edition, giving host cities more freedom to include the disciplines of their choice in the offer. main list of 22 sports. The main list, proposed by the Commonwealth Games Federation after consideration, includes shooting, wrestling and archery. Disciplines previously included in the list of optional sports, such as T20 cricket, beach volleyball and 3v3 basketball, have also been moved to the proposed main list of sports. The roadmap was approved at the CGF General Assembly, which took place almost last year.

The 2026 Games will be the 23rd major multi-sport event that began in Hamilton, Canada in 1930. Victoria is the world’s leading venue for major events and tourism. The state has a long track record of hosting top-level sports including the Australian Open, the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Melbourne Cup. The state also regularly hosts elite cricket, golf and Australian football competitions.
