Nottingham Forest’s title match in Bournemouth on Friday night was postponed after Storm Younis caused damage to the Vitality Stadium.

The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for much of southeast England, with strong winds and continued disruption expected across much of the region.

A statement posted on the club’s official website at 4:00 pm on Friday said: “Construction engineers have inspected the stadium and confirmed that the damage could pose a significant risk to the safety of fans.

“The continued impact of the storm means damage cannot be repaired in time to fill Friday’s game or Saturday’s rescheduled time.

“The postponement has been recommended by the club’s safety advisory group.

“A new match date will be announced in due course. All tickets purchased will be valid for the rescheduled match, but all fans will be eligible for a refund if they are unable to attend the new date.

“The club apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this announcement, but would like to assure fans that it was made with the safety of everyone who was supposed to be at the game in mind. »

Bournemouth are currently second in the league, six points behind leaders Fulham but four points ahead of third-placed Blackburn and Forest two points behind the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest expressed their disappointment with the decision, which was made less than four hours before kick-off.

Their statement said: “Nottingham Forest have received confirmation from AFC Bournemouth that today’s game has unfortunately been postponed.

“The club greatly appreciates the efforts of the supporters who have already arrived at Bournemouth and those who arrived this afternoon. We are extremely disappointed that the match will not take place this weekend. The club did everything possible to make the game happen.

“The club will confirm details in due course of a free coach ride to the rescheduled match for those who missed, as a thank you for your support.

“We wish our fans a happy journey home and look forward to seeing you all in Preston on Tuesday. »
