The spring 2022 anime season is perfect for fans of the sports genre

Like most other media, anime genres experience ups and downs in popularity. Over the past decade, isekai shows have dominated the medium and there are no signs of slowing down. Sports anime, on the other hand, has gone through a slump of sorts – these shows just haven’t had the same impact on fans as they did five years ago. Most of the popular shows of that era have either ended or don’t herald a new season. Meanwhile, new sports series often fell short of expectations.

However, the spring 2022 season may well change this trend. There are five unparalleled sports titles this season, none of which cover the same activity. From football to horse racing, each has its own unique qualities to offer viewers. Of these, the top three on MyAnimeList have a lot of potential. Whether it’s for an animation studio or the story they’re planning to tell, these anime can just throw the genre off the rails.

AoashiAoashi Aoi

This series is supported by anime fans who pay attention to animation studios. Produced by Production IG, known for their impressive work on high-profile shows such as Vinland saga and the first seasons of both Attack of the Titans and Haikyu!!, Aoashi already have a pedigree. On top of that, he sets the stage for a sports series in its first installment with an obviously flawed protagonist.

Ashito Aoi immediately established himself as a competent footballer. Every time he has the ball, he can score a goal. However, this is also a problem for other players on the field. Ashito’s team’s main strategy is to pass the ball to him and let him score, which makes him self-centered towards his opponents. Their assumptions are not wrong – Ashito admits that he is selfish, but his team accepts it. This attitude may have worked for him so far, but it also had consequences: due to his reputation and immaturity, he loses the opportunity to get into a well-known school team.

At the end of Episode 1, he has a chance to travel to Tokyo and join the team, but only after he proves his dedication to improving himself in the sport. Ashito views the task his new coach has given him as a challenge, and as a result does his best to complete it correctly. In one episode Aoashi balances the protagonist’s strengths and weaknesses. He is not a child prodigy and not someone who can do one thing well – he is a passionate child who has room to grow.

dance dancer

Dance Theater Dance Dance

dance dancer also has a famous animation studio supporting it. MAPPA, known for his work on Jiu-Jitsu Kaisenrecent seasons Attack of the Titans and next Chainsaw adaptation, is responsible for bringing this anime to life. Episode 1 showcases the studio’s legendary recap in minutes with its first ballet demonstration in a stunning performance that doesn’t use polarized computer animation.

However, the biggest attraction for many fans is the message he is about to convey. The protagonist, Junpei, fell in love with ballet as a child and forced himself to take part despite his father’s brief resistance. Then tragedy struck and Junpei suddenly felt he had to get rid of his “feminine” interest. Willingly or unwittingly, the expectations and comments of others push him to follow in his father’s footsteps, so he abandons ballet in favor of martial arts.

Despite his insistence that he is done dancing, it is clear to the public that this is not the case. He always wants to, but stops most of the time. That’s why, although the reason for his return is the girl he likes, Junpei returning to ballet feels authentic. Even doing things that should make him a man, Junpei returns to the studio every day. Dancing, he experiences sensations that he never experiences in martial arts. How he manages to rediscover his love and communicate it to others will be the main driving force of this series.
